Keyboard shortcuts

DomiSol is built to be typed. A phrase is a word you type, not a series of clicks — most of the speed is in this table.

Writing notes

The pitch keys follow the display. The letters work in solfa and the numbers work in jianpu. The other set does nothing, so if nothing happens when you type, check the d r m / 1 2 3 switch on the Note tab.

The two worth memorising are _ and -. Flat is the underscore (Shift and the minus key). The minus key on its own is Hold, which lengthens the note. A rest is 0. The sharp, flat and natural keys toggle: press the same one again to take it off.

Whether a pitch key replaces the note at the cursor or inserts a new one after it is set by Typing on the Note tab, not by a shortcut — see Notes, rhythm and rests. It has no key of its own on purpose: a mode a stray keystroke could flip would be worse than no mode at all. Enter and ⇧+Enter above work the same way in both modes.

Set the duration first; it sticks until you change it. With a note selected, these change that note instead. The 32nd note has no key, because every free letter is already a pitch or another duration. Use its button on the Note tab.

Pitch and octave

Shift+↑ / ↓	Move up or down one octave
↑ / ↓	Move the selected note one scale step

o and Shift+↑/↓ change the selected note. With nothing selected, they set the octave for the notes you type next.

↑/↓ moves by scale step, not semitone, so 4 becomes 5. With ⌘/Ctrl+A first, it shifts the whole piece — a quick way to try a melody higher for your sopranos.

Playback and practice

On a phone

It depends which DomiSol you’re using.

In the browser (dash.domisol.app) the Shortcuts button is hidden on a phone-sized screen, since there are no keys to press. Connect a Bluetooth keyboard, though, and every key on this page works. Without one, the pitch keyboard along the bottom does the typing:

• a row of note lengths, with the dot
• a row with rest, hold, octave down, octave up, delete, undo and redo
• the pitch keys, always the set for the current display

Everything else is in the tools panel. Open it with the panel button at the right end of the top bar and it slides up from the bottom. Its Note tab has Typing (Replace / Insert), Before / After, tie, chords and the sharp, flat and natural. The pitch keyboard folds away while the panel is open; tap Pitch keyboard to bring it back.

In the DomiSol app for iPhone and Android there are no shortcuts, even with a keyboard connected. The controls along the bottom are:

• a row with the Replace / Insert switch, the note lengths and the dot, rest, hold —, + before and + after
• the pitch keys, with delete (⌫) at the end
• a row of 8va▲ / 8vb▼, sharp, flat, tie and the dynamics, which act on the selected note

Undo and redo are pinned at the right end of the row of buttons above the score.
